Salary:  $110,000 – $120,000 (based on experience and credentials)

Join a fast-paced, mission-driven organization that’s increasing opportunities for young people to thrive. We’re seeking a dynamic Vice President of Development to lead strategic development efforts, cultivate transformational relationships, and elevate our fundraising and communications to the next level.

As the VP of Development, you will work alongside the CEO, senior leadership team, and board of directors to develop and implement a comprehensive, multi-channel fundraising strategy that fuels our mission. You’ll lead a high-performing development team and manage a portfolio of individual, corporate, and foundation donors to secure gifts of $5,000 and above.

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Fundraising Leadership

  • Lead and implement annual fundraising strategies across major gifts, government grants,
    contracts, corporate partnerships, and events.
  • Develop and track fundraising goals, budgets, and KPIs aligned with the organizational
    strategic plan.
  • Stay informed on fundraising trends and adapt strategies to ensure innovation and
    effectiveness.

Major Gift & Donor Engagement

  • Manage a portfolio of 75+ major gift prospects, utilizing a disciplined moves
    management process.
  • Create customized cultivation experiences to deepen donor relationships and inspire long-
    term support.
  • Partner with the CEO and board development committee on major donor outreach and
    stewardship.

Events & Engagement

  • Plan and execute major donor events, recognition programs, and site tours that connect
    supporters with impact.
  • Collaborate with leadership to elevate donor experience and expand the organization’s
    community of champions.

Communications & Brand Strategy

  • Strengthen brand visibility and fundraising communications in partnership with the communications team.
  • Ensure all donor-facing content reflects current priorities and advances our values and
    voice.

Team Leadership & Internal Management

  • Supervise the development team, including the Development and Grants Manager and contracted grant writer.
  • Oversee internal systems, donor database management, and reconciliation processes to
    ensure data accuracy.
  • Partner cross-functionally with the EVP and the Senior Manager of Communications.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; CFRE or advanced professional development preferred.
  • At least 5 years of progressive fundraising experience, with a strong track record of
    securing major gifts ($5,000+).
  • Strategic thinker with deep knowledge of development best practices and donor
    stewardship.
  • Experience with nonprofit grant management.
  • Exceptional communication and storytelling skills.
  • Collaborative leadership style and ability to influence across multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Passion for youth development, education, and community empowerment.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and donor management systems (e.g., Bloomerang and/or
    Salesforce).

Administration to join our senior leadership team. This is a unique opportunity to strengthen the financial health and operational backbone of an organization committed to access and excellence for students and families.

About the Role

The VP of Finance & Administration ensures the financial integrity, administrative strength, and operational efficiency of the organization. You’ll lead finance and compliance functions, steward cross-functional operations, and contribute to strategic decision-making—all within a values- driven, access-focused culture.

Core Responsibilities

Financial Strategy & Management

  • Lead daily finance operations: cash management, accounting, reporting, and budget
    oversight.
  • Prepare monthly financials, forecasts, contract and grant-specific reports for internal and
    board use.
  • Maintain accurate ledgers and manage audit preparation, restricted funds, and compliance.

Audit & Compliance

  • Coordinate annual audits and IRS Form 990 filings with external auditors.
  • Strengthen internal controls and ensure compliance with funding and regulatory
    requirements.

Operations & HR Administration

  • Oversee vendor, insurance, and banking relationships.
  • Support payroll, onboarding/offboarding, and benefits administration in partnership with
    HR.
  • Manage contract compliance and internal IT systems in collaboration with external
    providers.

Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as staff lead for the Finance and Audit Committee.
  • Collaborate across development and program teams to align resources with mission
    impact.
  • Participate in strategy and culture-building as part of the executive team.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred).
  • Minimum 7-10 years in finance leadership, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Expertise in grant accounting and funder compliance.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit HR, IT systems, and operations.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel; experience with QuickBooks and financial systems
    preferred.
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

Through a collective impact approach, NextUp builds power across sectors by convening and collaborating with youth, families, OST partners, businesses, and government agencies and organizations. Our partners include youth development agencies in Richmond and a network of over 150 youth program providers.  

NextUp is a hybrid work environment. We work from home Mondays and Fridays and are in-office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
