Celebrating available youth summer programs – Southside Summer Kick-Off

On May 31, 2025, nearly 200 families connected with available summer programs at the Southside Summer Kick-Off. These programs come at no cost to Richmond youth aged 11 – 19.

The Southside Summer Kick-Off, created in partnership by NextUp, the City of Richmond, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond, Richmond Public Schools, Liberation Church, and others, rang in the summer with bounce houses, free food and drinks, sports and games, and plenty of opportunities to connect with youth development organizations.

The Kick-Off celebrates a locally piloted project called the Neighborhood Initiative – Southside, made possible through the City of Richmond’s “Safer Communities” grant funded by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. The Neighborhood Initiative-Southside pilot extends youth development programs, services, and resources in Richmond’s Southside by making more than a dozen free summer programs available at convenient locations:

  • Lucille Brown Middle School
  • The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond’s Southside Teen Center
  • Liberation Resource Center

Neighborhood Initiative – Southside summer programs are available through and managed by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond.

Youth and families can explore and connect with programs through NextUp’s Youth Program Locator.
