Middle School Alliance

Free afterschool programs are available at six Richmond Public Middle Schools Monday through Thursday:

  • Henderson Middle School
  • Boushall Middle School
  • Albert Hill Middle School
  • Lucille Brown Middle School
  • River City Middle School
  • MLK, Jr. Middle School


Programs run from 3 pm – 6:30 pm. Snacks / a meal and transportation home are provided.

NextUp Middle School Alliance programs are coordinated by youth development agencies The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond and The YMCA of Greater Richmond (Ignite). 

Program categories include:

  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
  • Sports and Health
  • Leadership and Work Readiness
  • Arts and Humanities

Winter program dates

The following Middle School Alliance Winter programs run from January 21 – March 20, 2025. Registration for Winter session closes January 30, 2025. Programs do not operate when schools are closed for holidays, weather-related closings, educational work days, etc..

How to sign up

  1. Register and enroll your child in The Middle School Alliance through the NextUp Parent Portal. Your registration will be valid for the entire school year, so you will not need to register for each session. You’ll provide:
    • Your contact information
    • Information about your child (like emergency contacts, their RPS student number, allergies, etc.)
    • Signatures for waivers and other forms
  2. Your child will receive a scheduling form to select their program(s) from their YMCA or Boys & Girls Club Site Leads at their school. Once your child completes the form, they will be enrolled in their afterschool program(s) and able to attend.

About The Middle School Alliance

The Middle School Alliance is a collective impact approach to strengthen afterschool programming, resources, and support services for Richmond youth and families. We are excited to deepen our partnerships with two phenomenal youth development agencies: The YMCA of Greater Richmond and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond. Together, working alongside the City of Richmond, RPS, OST partners and youth programs we intend to serve more youth and families with the evolution of our core model work in RPS middle schools.

Please note, some programs only run on certain days and time blocks. Students can sign up for more than one program.
